Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel: Kyun Kyun Tokimeki Paradise!! anime review

posted in: Anime Review, Featured | 13

After my Ikoku Meiro no Croisée post another entry for the Anime Summerseason 2011.
Today I’d like to share my opinion about the magical girl comedy show Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel.

Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel: Kyun Kyun Tokimeki Paradise!! is a 12 episode long anime show produced by J.C. Staff, originally based on a pachinko slot machine game. The story of this show is simple, it centers around Haruka Minazuki and Aoi Kannazuki, two students of St. Cherine academy, at night they are the magical girl duo Twin Angel who fight against the organisation Black Auction and protect the seven amulets who contains an immense power from them. In 2008 there already was a two episode long Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel OVA made by studio Nomad.

[singlepic id=1397 w=320 h=240 float=none] [singlepic id=1400 w=320 h=240 float=none] Haruka is a cheerful and upbeat character, in Twin Angel mode she is a close combat type, while Aoi the more calm and collected character does long range attacks with her bow. My favorite character was Haruka because she’s cute, but in terms of character depth their teacher is the more interesting person, she is debt ridden and while searching for a part time job she gets pulled to the side of the main villain Black Trader who wants the 7 amulets to fullfill his wrath.

[singlepic id=1401 w=320 h=240 float=none] [singlepic id=1402 w=320 h=240 float=none] In the later episodes another character joins the Twin Angel Duo, Kurumi Hazuki, a tsundere character who always gets into arguments with Haruka, they are like cat and dog. She is something like the explosive expert of Twin Angel who throws different kinds of bombs at her opponents. In the last quarter of Twin Angel two new villains appear, Tesla and Nine, the adopted daughters of Black Trader, they hate Twin Angel and bring more life into the story.

[singlepic id=1399 w=320 h=240 float=none] [singlepic id=1398 w=320 h=240 float=none] The voice acting is done by a talented cast, the main characters, Aoi and Haruka are voiced by Noto, Mamiko (Sawako – Kimi ni Todoke) and Tamura, Yukari (Nanoha – Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha) Kurumi Hazuki is voiced by Kurumi Kugimiya, Rie (Louise – Zero no Tsukaima).

[singlepic id=1403 w=320 h=240 float=none] [singlepic id=1404 w=320 h=240 float=none] The show wants to be a parody of magical girl anime and a magical girl anime at the same time, but that doesn’t work especially well most of the time I have to say. Even though Twin Angel has it’s good and funny moments, the second half of the anime also feels a bit out of good ideas and also a bit rushed and therefore development from the story and the characters lack in substance.

I think when you have such great voice actors, you should make a less half assed job with the plot. Well, there are a few good action scenes and overall the characters and the magical girl outfits are very cute, but something crucal is missing.
It was a cute, cheesy and funny anime, but it could have been better in terms of plot and pacing.

Also the catchy Op “Onna no Kotte Maji Chō Angel” and Ed song “Shining☆Star” were nice.

This was another one of the shows I was planning on watching last season, even more so after I heard Yukari Tamura and Mamiko Noto voiced the leads. Now I read that Rie Kugimiya is also in it? Should give it a spin. As for how you described it sounds like one of your B-List JC Staff shows which is just find for something as silly as a show adapted from pachinko.

      thx for commenting ^^

Kugimiya did the voicing of the small one with the catears, quite the lineup.
Yeah albeit from the great voice actors it’s nothing for an A-list.
On the other hand Twin Angel isn’t more silly than J.C. Staffs detective parody Milky Holmes 🙂

I must admit that I was very, very confused when I heard of this show, because there was an anime named Twin Angels that came out about fifteen years ago, and it is very much not the kind of anime that would get a television series. I got a little bit excited at first but then I learned that the shows are not related and then I felt sad.

I guess I’ve seen this title on MAL ^^
Ah haha I see, well this Twin Angel is probably not the show for you

hahah I’m so surprised that J.C staff produce these type of anime and even more surprised with the voice cast you just mentioned! Normally you wouldn’t get such well known seiyuu’s for these anime

Kurumi Kugimiya, Rie, just can’t seem to stand her voice>< I like RIO though! RIO RAINBOW GATEXD!!

    • wieselhead

Haha well just a little bit more effort and this would have been a better show, believe me 🙂
Well her voice is really a bit overused, but I love her XD
btw Rio was voice by Inoue, Marina

An underrated series that I quite liked in the last season.
It ended up becoming better than many more “featured” series. 😛

      I liked it, as well
maybe I was a bit harsh in my review,
but there were things which could have been better

I watched the first episode of this and thought it was really fun and silly. But I kinda wanted it to be more silly than standard magical girl and go to full blown parody, so I never got around to watching it haha.

It can’t decide if it’s doing magical girls straight or if it’s parodying them and it kinda hurts the show overall. I would have probably liked it if it committed to either one.

The first episodes were the best, the girl was the better villian, it was hilarious.
But parody and being serious doesn’t work, also not for J.C. Staff

I agree with there being a lack of substance in Kaitou Tenshi. From the first episode it really looked like it was written by amateur writers, especially when you consider how little background information was given on the characters.

Hi thx for checking out the older posts I posted while you were away 🙂
This show could have been a lot better with a better written story, it really felt like being written by amateurs.
well Dannychoo like it somehow ^^
