Usagi Drop – anime review

posted in: Anime Review, Featured | 16

Today I can present you the 4th review of an Summerseason 2011 anime after  Ikoku Meiro no Croisée , Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel and Ro-Kyu-Bu it’s time for great show Usagi Drop.

Usagi Dropis a 11 episode long anime made by Production I.G. and Fuji TV, was adapted from the manga written by Unita Yumi. Some said that Usagi Drop was the best anime of this summer season 2011 and damn they are right, Usagi Drop is great. The way things are portrayed let it appear grown up, heartwarming and realistic it is quite different than most other anime shows.

[singlepic id=1430 w=320 h=240 float=none] [singlepic id=1433 w=320 h=240 float=none] The anime tells the story of Daikichi a 30 year old bachelor and the child Rin and the things they experience during one year. At the funeral Daikichi learns, that his passed away grandfather had an illegimate child, called Rin. Rin has a mother, but she seems to be quite messed up and can’t take care of her, somehow I can’t really hate her for that, there’s also a medical term for such behaviour, when you can’t develop a proper emotional bonding with your child after it’s birth.

[singlepic id=1432 w=320 h=240 float=none] [singlepic id=1431 w=320 h=240 float=none] Her mother dropped Rin at the house of relatives, but nobody wants to take care of her, Daikichi dislikes this situation, puts together all his courage and takes Rin with him, no he is no pervert ;p

[singlepic id=1435 w=320 h=240 float=none] [singlepic id=1436 w=320 h=240 float=none] He wants to take care of her even though he has to sacrifice parts of his career and his bachelor life has ended, so that he can be a good dad for Rin, but when looking at Rin, we see that taking responsibility for some one can be very nice, she is a well behaved, sprightly and cute girl.

But they arent the only characters, there are Daikichi’s parents who show a lot more kindness torwards her than  they did in the beginning, Kouki is a friend of Rin, who always accompanies her on th way to school. He’s a quit wild and active scallywag. Thx to him Daikichi comes in contact with his pretty and kind mother Yukari, I won’t write milf, oh crap I already did it XD.

Both can exchange their experinces about being a single parent and and help eachother to take care of Rin and Kouki, in case it is neccesary or when the parents are tied up with business.

[singlepic id=1437 w=320 h=240 float=none] [singlepic id=1434 w=320 h=240 float=none] Daikichi is an awesome spare dad, well he isn’t the dad of the year, but he has the right attitude and learns new things about being a parent from other parents. There are a few hardships for Daikichi and Rin, but they weld them together even more. This is a nice anime which portrays the life of family’s, mainly single parent family’s and how they must combine their job and the responsibility torwards their children, it is also shown how much joy they have, by raising a child.

The artstyle is a bit unusual, the colors are not strong as in most other shows, but nevertheless it looks very charming and harmonic, this look is fitting for Usagi Drop. This family show delivers good comedy and quite emotional, heartwarming moments without being melodramatic or cheesy.

There are scanlations already of the complete chapters of Usagi Drop. The ending isn’t quite what you’ll expect O_O

Oh I guess I couldn’t deal with a sad ending ending for these two 🙁

This is one of the best anime I’ve seen for this year. It’s so sweet and loving throughout. The way Daikichi cares for Rin, he is the dad of the year for me. =)

Yeah it was quite an enjoyable and heartwarming show, it was so different than most other anime these days.

      He’s great

I read the manga from where it was adapted and I thought the story and the characters were really heartwarming. Good to know the anime turned out good.

I watched this show and loved it! so I decided to read the manga, as the manga was complete. After I finished reading the manga, I felt really disappointed with the ending but could see how it ended up in that. I sadly dropped the anime, as I thought it would end in that way but guess not!

I loved the art and as you said, it’s fitting for Usagi Drop.

But I’m glad that this anime ended it at the right place; I’m sure most people will be =| after reading the manga.

      hi there thx for commenting.
Ah I see that’s understandable then, I guess I don’t want to know how the manga ended.
I think it is mean to build up such a nice family story and destroying it with a big bang ^@^

From the sound of things the manga would kill my enjoyment of the series. I hoped Usagi Drop would last longer and go more into the story, but I’m glad it ended on a happy note. I loved Daikichi and Rin and I just couldn’t get enough of them every week. Definitely one of the best anime during it’s season ^^

    I really liked this series. My favorite of the season. It’s not very exciting but it has a nice, heart-warming story and I love the characters. I sort of wished the relationship between Daikichi and Kouki’s mom was developed more though ^^;
Anyway, I liked it enough to buy the manga so maybe the story will go on from there 🙂

      Many people liked it 🙂
A more realistic but heartwarming setting with likeable characters, It’s the kind of anime I like a lot, next to the random stuff I watch.
I don’t know if you should read the end, a few people said that it isn’t fitting for Usagi Drop.

Usagi Drop was very different from all the regular anime I’m used to, but I thought it was an excellent series. As you said, it was heartwarming and is a great family anime. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the live action movie sometime.

the plot of the anime should work great as show with real characters.
I’ve heard that the manga ending was quite disenchanting, so I don’t know if I want to see a second anime season of Usagi Drop.
